Automotive was the first American industry to adopt the usage of plastic reusable bulk containers. By the end of the 20th century, all major manufacturers were committed to the usage of plastic bulk containers over cardboard expendable packaging. The 45" x 48" footprint became the industry-standard for lightweight, larger parts, while the 30" x 32" became the industry-standard for heavy, small parts.
The benefits of plastic reusable containers over cardboard packaging were clear-cut: more efficient, more ergonomically, more environmentally friendly, and more economical.
